Doctor Strange was Aggressively Mediocre

If there was ever a movie that the website Aggressively Mediocre Film was built for, that movie was Doctor Strange. What an exceptionally average film.

Look it's Benedict Cumberbatch! This has to be good right? Wrong.
Despite an all star cast featuring only one Asian person in a movie set mostly in Asia, the characters are flat and boring. There is the hero, the love interest, the friend, the teacher, and Marvel villain #221, and that's about all I can say about any of them. Cumberbatch in particular, one of my favorite actors working at the moment, is just, well, dull. Dull is a word that would apply to most of this new Marvel origin story. It takes forever to get going and then doesn't go to many interesting places, and at times is just plain dumb. Tonally the film is more hapless than we've come to expect from a Marvel movie, but there are some poorly executed slapstick jokes to break up the tension.
In most Marvel movies I find myself wishing for less action scenes and more story and character development, but this film was the opposite. The characters and plot were so uninteresting that I kept waiting to see some more mind bending action, and the film delivered on that front. The visually stunning action sequences wowed and were what made this movie worth watching. That and the cape. I liked the cape.
If you're a fan of action or comic book movies, there's enough here to make the film a worthwhile experience, but otherwise stay away from this aggressively mediocre and ultimately forgettable film. How it earned a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes I'll never understand.
